Fire & Police

One of the primary responsibilities of the City is to provide police and fire protection.

The City's paid on-call Fire Department pledges to protect all people, homes and businesses in the City. The Fire Department responds quickly and with highly trained personnel to fire and medical emergencies. The City maintains two fire stations and works cooperatively with adjacent communities as needed to provide the highest quality and most timely response possible.

Explorer Program
Currently the Fire Department is seeking applicants for the Explorer Program. The purpose of the Explorer Program is to provide experiences that help young people mature and prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. The program helps develop, train and prepare interested young persons for a career in full-time, volunteer or paid-on-call firefighting and emergency medical services. This includes providing basic types of assistance to the St. Michael Fire Department during and immediately after firefighting and emergency medical activities.
The Cadet Division is made up of young people between the ages of 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) and 21 who have an interest in fire and emergency medical services. This also acts as a feeder program for the Fire Department. At the age of 18, cadets may apply to the Reserve Division of the Fire Department and progress through the ranks. For more information on the Explorer Program, or to obtain an application contact Liz Gammelgaard at
